A Home Away From Home Is Coming to Madison

Fisher House Wisconsin is working to bring a Fisher House to the Madison community, providing free, temporary lodging for the families and caregivers of Veterans receiving care at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital.

This future Fisher House will ensure that families no longer have to travel long distances or shoulder the financial burden of hotels while supporting a loved one during a medical crisis. Instead, families will have a safe, welcoming place to stay — just minutes from the hospital — when being close matters most.

Why Madison Needs a Fisher House

The Madison VA serves Veterans from across southern and central Wisconsin, many of whom live hours away from the hospital. Extended inpatient stays can quickly create emotional and financial strain for families who want to be present but face difficult choices around travel, lodging, and time away from home.

A Madison Fisher House will:

  • Keep families close to care

  • Reduce out-of-pocket lodging expenses

  • Ease emotional and financial stress during treatment

  • Create a supportive community for caregivers

This house will be a vital addition to the Madison care ecosystem — supporting not just Veterans, but the families who stand beside them.

The Fisher House Model

Fisher Houses are built through a public-private partnership between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Fisher House Foundation. Homes are constructed and furnished through philanthropy, donated to the VA, and operated at no cost to families.

Each Fisher House is designed to feel like a real home, typically featuring:

  • Private family suites with bedrooms and bathrooms

  • Shared kitchens, dining rooms, and living spaces

  • Laundry facilities and outdoor gathering areas

Once open, families must be referred by the VA to stay at the Madison Fisher House.

Project Status & Timeline

Significant progress has already been made to bring a Fisher House to Madison.

  • Partnerships in place with the VA and Fisher House Foundation

  • Targeted construction start: Summer 2026

  • Estimated total project cost: $9–12 million

When complete, the Madison Fisher House will serve families year-round and provide support for generations to come.

Fundraising Progress So Far

Thanks to strong community leadership and early investment, Fisher House Wisconsin has already made meaningful progress toward construction of the Madison Fisher House.

  • More than $3.8 million contributed toward the project to date

  • Includes a $1 million donation made in 2025, underscoring strong confidence in the project and its long-term impact

These early gifts have helped establish momentum and position the project for construction. Significant fundraising remains, and continued community support will be critical to bringing this home to life.
